A volatile confrontation occurred on Tuesday in Ibodi, within the Atakunmosa West Local Government Area of Osun State, involving local council leaders from the Ijesa South Federal Constituency and military personnel. The dispute centered on efforts by local government officials, supported by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and police officers, to disrupt illegal mining operations that have caused significant environmental damage.
The standoff began when council chairmen moved to stop individuals from collecting unauthorized levies and tickets at mining sites. Military personnel on-site blocked the enforcement team, leading to a tense exchange. Stability was restored following the arrival of Hon. Sanya Omirin, the representative for Ijesa South in the House of Representatives, and high-ranking police officials. This intervention allowed the council to shut down the sites and halt illegal ticketing in both Ibodi and Ijana Wasare.
Mr. Lanre Balogun, speaking for the local chairmen, explained that the intervention was crucial to stop the destruction of farmlands and the pollution of water sources in areas like Ipinrindo and Itagunmodi. He noted that despite inquiries, the state mining office failed to provide clarity on the miners’ status. Many of these operations lack federal licenses and registration, yet illegal tax collection persists.
Hon. Omirin criticized the state government, alleging they facilitate illegal mining by issuing revenue tickets to unlicensed operators. He emphasized that only the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development holds the legal authority to grant mining licenses. Following discussions with traditional leaders, including Oba Adeniyi Adedeji of Ijana Wasare, the local authorities reaffirmed their commitment to protect their communities under the 1999 Constitution. All illegal mining activities have been banned until proper federal licensing is secured.
