The Kwankwasiyya Movement has declared that no amount of political pressure or judicial setbacks will deter its quest for a democratic alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections. This statement follows a court ruling that nullified the registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a political party.
Dr. Muhammad Sale Habibu, the movement’s spokesman, expressed significant concern regarding the court’s decision to reverse the prior order that had initially allowed the NDC to register. The movement maintains the vision of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, which emphasizes a governance model rooted in equity, justice, and accountability.
While the group stated it respects the judiciary’s constitutional role, it questioned the timing and integrity of the ruling. The movement suggested that the decision appears to be a deliberate attempt by influential entities to limit the democratic space and hinder the rise of opposition parties before the 2027 elections. The movement further noted that the emergence of this legal challenge during the Independent National Electoral Commission’s preparation for upcoming candidate nominations raises suspicion.
The group highlighted the ongoing debate among legal experts regarding whether the court possessed the proper jurisdiction to overturn its own final verdict. They urged the appellate courts to address these concerns to preserve public trust in the legal system. Concluding their statement, the Kwankwasiyya Movement reaffirmed its commitment to the NDC, asserting that true democracy relies on competitive elections and the protection of the public’s right to choose their leadership.
