Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), recently defended the selection of Rotimi Amaechi, the former governor of Rivers State, as the party’s vice-presidential running mate. Speaking on Channels Television, Okonkwo suggested that this choice serves as evidence that presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar does not hold bias against the Igbo people.
Addressing the internal party discussions, Okonkwo explained that the ADC prefers to resolve disagreements through democratic dialogue to ensure party unity before the 2027 elections. He clarified that his previous concerns regarding the vice-presidential slot were based on his belief that the Southeast deserved the position for geopolitical balance, given the region has not held the presidency or vice-presidency since 1999.
Okonkwo noted that Peter Obi’s departure from the nomination process limited the party’s options. He asserted that Atiku ultimately chose Amaechi due to his strong personal connections to the Southeast, which he interpreted as a signal that the candidate values the region’s interests. Having received assurances regarding the protection of Southeast interests, Okonkwo stated he now fully supports the ticket.
