In a widely circulated video, the First Lady encouraged unemployed women to start small-scale enterprises, specifically mentioning the sale of bean cakes, or akara, and roasted corn.
Many citizens criticized these remarks, arguing that suggesting such micro-businesses indicates a lack of a serious strategy to address Nigeria’s rising unemployment crisis. Critics expressed feeling disheartened that those in power are offering such suggestions instead of creating formal jobs.
Defending the First Lady on Facebook, Success argued that selling akara could be more profitable than traditional employment in a bank. He suggested that a well-placed business could net significant monthly earnings for only a few hours of work per day. He stated that he feels disappointed by those who dismiss the potential of the akara trade as a viable path for income.
