As the upcoming governorship election in Osun state approaches, local citizens are raising alarms regarding a surge in political hostilities and fatalities. Many fear that this volatile climate will negatively influence turnout on Saturday.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria, residents expressed deep anxiety over the prospect of a chaotic or incomplete electoral process. Civil servant Seun Akinboboye noted that the atmosphere of intimidation and bloodshed could deter people from participating. He called upon candidates to restrain their supporters and urged security agencies to bolster protections for voters.
Business owner Demilola Olasunkanmi echoed these sentiments, insisting that authorities must restrict movement to essential personnel only and enhance oversight to ensure public safety. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Oluwatoyin shared her decision to keep her family away from the polls entirely, stating that the risk to their lives is not worth the electoral process.
Conversely, 70-year-old resident Ajeniwura Adeoye encouraged his fellow citizens to remain brave. While acknowledging the widespread fear, he emphasized his own commitment to voting and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to maintain neutrality. Other residents, including Ronke Ajibade and Olawale Ibrahim, stressed that politicians should treat the contest as a fair competition rather than a life-or-death struggle, hoping for a calm environment that permits safe participation.
