Jude Bellingham strikes Argentina reserve player following England tournament exit

Jude Bellingham was involved in a confrontation with Argentina substitute Valentin Barco after England was eliminated from the World Cup.

Tensions flared after England’s 2-1 World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina when Jude Bellingham hit substitute Valentin Barco on the back of the head. Barco, who remained on the bench throughout the match, entered the pitch at the final whistle and was embracing his teammates when Bellingham approached and struck him. This action triggered a brief altercation involving several players.

While the exact motive for the incident is unclear, video evidence captures Barco running onto the field to celebrate in front of England players following Enzo Fernandez’s 85th-minute goal. Argentina secured victory through a stoppage-time header from Lautaro Martinez, overcoming an earlier lead provided by Anthony Gordon. Barco, currently with Strasbourg, had previously appeared during a group stage match against Jordan.

The match in Atlanta was notably aggressive, featuring 19 fouls in the first half alone under referee Ismail Elfath. Bellingham, who netted six goals during the tournament, also engaged in an early-match disagreement with Lionel Messi following a foul on teammate Elliot Anderson. Bellingham later dismissed the exchange with Messi as a simple discussion, urging observers not to inflate the significance of the event.
