Authorities in Jigawa State have reported that six people died and 23 were rescued after a boat sank in the Ringim Local Government Area. Auwalu Danladi Sankara, the Commissioner for Special Duties and Humanitarian Affairs, provided this update during a visit to the Malamawar Yandutse community.
The vessel, which was carrying an estimated 30 to 40 individuals, overturned at approximately 1 pm on Sunday. While 23 passengers survived, rescue teams are continuing their efforts to find those still missing. Sankara confirmed that the deceased would be interred following Islamic traditions.
Local resident Aminu Kafinta stated that the boat was dangerously overloaded. Despite warnings from community members for the passengers to reduce their numbers, the group ignored the advice, leading to the immediate capsizing of the vessel. Kafinta urged the government to build a bridge over the river to replace the risky transport method and stop the frequent tragedies that plague the area annually.
