Ireland’s T20 Series Against India Aims to Build Momentum for 2030 World Cup

Assistant coach Gary Wilson believes Ireland’s upcoming T20 series against India will spark excitement for the 2030 World Cup, which the nation will co-host.

Ireland assistant coach Gary Wilson believes the upcoming T20I matches against India at Stormont provide a perfect chance to generate enthusiasm for the 2030 World Cup, which Ireland will co-host alongside England and Scotland. With Belfast set to serve as a host site, local supporters get an early look at the world champions during the games on Friday and Sunday.

Although Ireland’s focus shifts to ODI World Cup qualifiers next year, Wilson notes that secured spots in both the 2028 and 2030 tournaments allow the team to plan long-term for the shorter format. He expressed an ambitious goal for the 2030 tournament, suggesting the team should aim to replicate Kenya’s historic 2003 semi-final run.

The squad faces some absences due to injury this week, but Wilson views this as a prime opportunity for emerging players to compete against elite opposition. Lorcan Tucker has been named the permanent T20I captain in place of the injured Paul Stirling. Wilson expressed full confidence in Tucker’s leadership, noting his diligence, planning skills, and the strong respect he commands within the dressing room.
