Ingebrigtsen Criticizes Kerr for Skipping European Championships

Jakob Ingebrigtsen claims that Josh Kerr’s choice to miss the European Championships is detrimental to athletics, arguing that elite athletes have a duty to compete in major title events.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen has expressed significant disappointment regarding Josh Kerr’s decision to bypass the European Championships. The Norwegian athlete argues that top competitors opting out of major events damages the sport’s integrity. Fresh from securing his record-tying seventh European gold in the 5,000m after recovering from Achilles surgery, Ingebrigtsen emphasized that championships exist specifically to showcase the world’s best talent.

While Ingebrigtsen acknowledged that Kerr recently achieved a notable world record, he insisted that athletes should not have to choose between chasing fast times and securing titles. He stated that professionals are capable of managing both obligations within their schedules. The rivalry between the two has intensified over the years, marked by both high-stakes races and verbal sparring, such as Kerr’s critiques of the Norwegian’s behavior and Ingebrigtsen’s confident remarks regarding his own fitness.

The 25-year-old Norwegian dismissed the notion that such competition schedules are overly demanding, comparing the life of a professional runner to standard daily work commitments. Despite their differences, Ingebrigtsen maintained that the primary purpose of their discipline is for elite performers to face each other in the championship arena.
