INEC Promises Transparent and Lawful Osun Governorship Election

Oluwatoyin Babalola of the Independent National Electoral Commission has assured stakeholders that the upcoming Osun governorship election will be conducted with full legal compliance, transparency, and integrity.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has pledged that the upcoming August 15 governorship election in Osun State will be managed strictly according to constitutional and Electoral Act mandates. Oluwatoyin Babalola, the Osun Resident Electoral Commissioner, provided this guarantee during a roundtable meeting held in Osogbo, which focused on maintaining legal standards and integrity in the voting process.

Babalola emphasized that strictly following legal frameworks is the most effective way to prevent electoral fraud. He stated that the commission is dedicated to neutrality and professionalism, aiming to deliver results that truly represent the choice of Osun voters. He noted that Nigeria has successfully hosted polls in the past that did not lead to any legal disputes, citing this as a goal for future operations.

Abimbola Aladejare-Salako, head of the New Generation Girls and Women Development Initiative, noted that previous elections, such as the one in Ekiti, revealed specific shortcomings in applying the 2026 Electoral Act. Her organization hosted the forum to evaluate those past experiences and determine how to improve transparency and public engagement for the Osun contest. She stressed that active civic participation is essential for a healthy democracy and that identifying operational challenges now is crucial for a successful election cycle.
