Ghanaian Social Media Personality Extradited to US in $8 Million Fraud Case

Ghanaian influencer Frederick Kumi has been extradited to the US to face charges in an $8 million romance scam targeting elderly victims using AI-generated identities.

Frederick Kumi, a Ghanaian influencer known as Abu Trica, is now in US custody to face trial for a massive romance scam. Prosecutors claim he defrauded elderly Americans out of over $8 million by using AI to craft fake online personas. By building false trust on dating apps and social media, he allegedly convinced victims to send him significant funds.

Kumi, who denies all accusations, could face up to two decades in prison if found guilty of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. His legal representative, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, claimed the extradition lacked proper judicial review, noting that Kumi was already on a flight to the US before the local court could intervene.

Known for showcasing a lavish lifestyle to his 100,000 Instagram followers, Kumi was apprehended last year through a collaborative effort between Ghanaian and American law enforcement. Investigators believe he coordinated with associates across both countries to funnel stolen assets. Currently, a discrepancy exists regarding his age, with defense lawyers stating he is 28, while US officials record him as 31.

This case is being handled under the US Elder Abuse Prevention and Prosecution Act. It serves as part of a wider US initiative to combat organized fraud networks operating out of West Africa, following recent convictions of other high-profile suspects like Joseph Kwadwo Badu Boateng and Oluwaseun Adekoya.
