Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter recently argued that the 2026 World Cup diminished in status due to excessive political interference. While he acknowledged the rightful victory of the tournament’s champion, he maintained that the integrity of the event was compromised throughout its duration.
Writing on the social media platform X, Blatter emphasized the need for stakeholders to restore the sport to its core principles. He warned against allowing politics to dictate match outcomes, suggesting that fans and national associations should take back control of football under fresh leadership.
The tournament, held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, faced multiple controversies. Iran was notably forced to relocate its training base to Mexico due to ongoing diplomatic friction between Washington and Tehran, which raised concerns about the fairness of tournament logistics. Additionally, the overturning of a red card issued to U.S. player Folarin Balogun sparked massive debate. Critics alleged that the reversal, which occurred before a match against Belgium, was influenced by a private conversation between President Donald Trump and FIFA head Gianni Infantino.
Blatter, who led FIFA from 1998 until his departure in 2015, has consistently challenged the current administration. He argued that disciplinary decisions should rely solely on evidence and established rules rather than political pressure.
