Iranian judicial officials announced the execution of Mohammad Amini Dehaghani on Wednesday. He was convicted of charges including moharebeh, or war against God, and corruption on earth following his involvement in protests earlier this year. State media reports state that Dehaghani was responsible for attacking a governor’s office and a police station in Dehaghan with a Molotov cocktail on January 9.
These protests, which began as demonstrations against soaring costs of living and a devalued currency, eventually transformed into broad political dissent. The government responded with a severe crackdown, claiming the unrest was orchestrated by foreign powers such as the United States and Israel. Official figures suggest 3,000 deaths during the clashes, though international human rights organizations argue the actual casualty count is higher and blame security forces for using lethal force.
Executions in Iran have increased significantly since the onset of the Middle East conflict on February 28. According to data from Amnesty International, Iran continues to rank as the world’s second-leading executioner, surpassed only by China.
