Femi Falana, a prominent human rights lawyer, has asserted that implementing state police will fail to resolve Nigeria’s security challenges unless the government simultaneously addresses the issue of unemployment. During an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Falana addressed the Senate’s recent approval of the State Police Bill.
Falana stressed that adding more police stations or increasing the number of officers lacks substance if the underlying socio-economic issues remain ignored. He questioned why the national discourse neglects the needs of the country’s vulnerable population and the lack of job opportunities for the youth. According to Falana, the nation must adopt a holistic approach to security, suggesting that localized police forces cannot mitigate the crisis while extreme poverty and joblessness persist among the citizenry.
