A severe multi-vehicle accident involving tankers, large trucks, and passenger automobiles occurred at the Ibadan Toll Gate section of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Friday night, leaving six people dead. The Oyo State Fire Service reported that the incident sparked a fire, resulting in significant gridlock that disrupted traffic through Saturday.
Moroof Akinwande, Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, stated that his team rescued eight survivors and transferred them to the Federal Road Safety Corps for urgent medical care. The agency was alerted to the crash around 9:29 p.m. by a police officer named Sola Rotimi. Upon arrival, emergency responders found six vehicles ablaze and worked to prevent the flames from spreading further.
Investigators believe that brake failure likely triggered the crash. Akinwande advised drivers to prioritize road safety and maintain operational fire extinguishers in their vehicles. Social media footage revealed the extent of the disaster, showing debris and scorched vehicle hulks blocking the highway.
The resulting traffic jam stranded numerous commuters for hours. Among those affected was comedian Bayegun Oluwatoyin, widely known as Woli Arole, who shared his experience on Facebook. He warned travelers to postpone trips to Ibadan due to the severe congestion and the aftermath of the vehicle inferno near the Guru Maharaj Ji area.
