A legal representative for the families of the young victims killed by Axel Rudakubana has described his recent relocation to the Broadmoor psychiatric hospital as a cynical attempt to control the legal system. Rudakubana, now 19, is serving a life term for the 2024 murders of Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, as well as the attempted murder of several others during a dance event.
On Thursday, the perpetrator was moved from HMP Belmarsh to the secure mental health facility in Berkshire. Under the Mental Health Act, inmates suffering from psychological disorders that threaten the safety of others or themselves can be transferred to such units. Chris Walker, the attorney for the victims’ families, noted that the timing of this announcement—shortly before the second anniversary of the tragedy—is particularly distressing for his clients.
Walker expressed frustration over the lack of transparency regarding the move, stating he is urgently seeking clarity from government officials. While the Ministry of Justice confirmed the transfer, they maintained that it does not alter the conditions of Rudakubana’s 52-year sentence. Given he was 17 at the time of the attack, a whole-life order could not be issued, though he remains unlikely to ever gain his freedom.
