Two police officers sustained injuries during a second night of anti-immigration protests in the market town of Thetford. Norfolk Police reported that significant resources were deployed to Clover Way on Wednesday to manage a large, aggressive group.
Authorities stated that one male officer was struck by a rock, while a female officer suffered a serious bite. Assistant Chief Constable Julie Dean emphasized that law enforcement will not tolerate violence against residents or officers performing their duties. These incidents followed unrest on Tuesday, during which properties on St John’s Way, Bracken Road, and Elm Road suffered damage, including smashed windows and broken fences.
South West Norfolk MP Terry Jermy denounced the events, describing them as deeply concerning and terrifying for those impacted. Two arrests were made on Wednesday regarding Tuesday’s activities, with a 68-year-old man charged for possession of an offensive weapon. Jermy previously urged the Home Office to improve communication regarding the housing of asylum seekers in the region, while stressing that mob rule is unacceptable regardless of personal views on immigration.
