Eradiri: Rivers Political Conflict Lacked Ijaw Ethnic Foundation

Former IYC president Udengs Eradiri insists the feud between Wike and Fubara was a internal PDP conflict unrelated to Ijaw interests, while calling for unity around new political candidates.

Udengs Eradiri, the former leader of the Ijaw Youths Council, has clarified that the friction between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Minister Nyesom Wike was strictly an internal dispute within the Peoples Democratic Party rather than an ethnic matter affecting the Ijaw people.

Eradiri noted that he previously warned against framing the conflict as an ethnic issue, though some local leaders ignored him, hoping to gain political leverage. He praised Fubara for choosing to reconcile with his political allies, noting that the rift caused lasting damage that will be difficult to repair.

Addressing the selection of Fubara as governor, Eradiri stated that Wike did not consult the Ijaw community before his appointment. He argued that if a formal process had occurred, Fubara might not have been the consensus candidate. Furthermore, he dismissed claims that Wike is an adversary of the Ijaw people, citing the minister’s history of supporting the community during the transition following Goodluck Jonathan’s presidency.

Eradiri pointed out that current Niger Delta representation in the federal government was largely facilitated by Wike, making the recent hostility toward him appear contradictory. He also criticized Fubara for the escalation, noting that Wike was responsible for his rapid political ascent, suggesting the governor underestimated the fallout of their disagreement.

Regarding the 2027 election, Eradiri expressed support for Major Jack as a gubernatorial running mate, encouraging the Ijaw community to unite behind him. He also suggested that if local leaders seek different outcomes, they should consider backing other viable candidates like Lulu-Briggs to ensure a competitive electoral process.
