Ten days before the governorship election, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has placed a hold on an Osun State government account held at First Bank. Documents obtained by Vanguard indicate that the agency implemented a ‘Post No Debit’ restriction on the account, which is primarily used to distribute staff salaries.
This action followed claims by Governor Ademola Adeleke, who had previously warned that the EFCC intended to block state accounts and those linked to key administration members. Kolapo Alimi, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, stated on Wednesday that this move aims to disrupt state operations just before the August 15 election. Governor Adeleke has contested the legal authority of the EFCC to intervene in this manner.
An anonymous source confirmed that the account is indeed restricted, noting that the governor plans to hold a press conference soon. The EFCC has yet to provide an official explanation for the freezing of the account, and the commission has not commented on the situation as of this report.
