Donald Trump recently proposed that FIFA grant the United States sole hosting rights for a future men’s World Cup, suggesting the nation should not share the event with Canada and Mexico. The former president shared his views during a reception at Trump Tower, where he spoke directly to FIFA head Gianni Infantino.
During the event, Trump remarked that the U.S. should be selected again but without regional partners. He also recommended that FIFA select a different host for the immediate future to alleviate international tensions. Trump noted that Infantino previously proposed a joint bid between the United States and China, citing the logistical benefit of shorter travel times for players.
The next opportunity for a U.S. bid is the 2038 World Cup, as the 2030 and 2034 events have already been assigned to other regions. Current regulations allow North American nations to bid for the 2038 tournament. The United States is presently preparing to co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside its neighbors, representing the first time a men’s tournament has been held across three different countries.
