Delta Police Officers Face Trial Over Extortion Video
Delta State Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, has initiated a summary trial for two officers following a viral video that shows them extorting money from a civilian.
The accused officers, identified as Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, were recorded inside the C Division police station in Asaba. The footage displays a man forced to transfer 51,500 Naira via a point-of-sale device while an officer stands by.
State police spokesperson Bright Edafe confirmed the disciplinary proceedings, noting that the trial is scheduled for completion shortly with the results to be made public. He emphasized that the force does not tolerate such conduct.
Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu circulated the three-minute video on social media, claiming that point-of-sale operators are frequently utilized within Delta police stations to facilitate illegal payments.
