Commercial farmers in Cross River State are voicing frustration toward the Bank of Agriculture (BoA), claiming the institution has failed to provide the essential financial support required to enhance local food production. Agricultural stakeholders, such as former state chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Chief Ilem Nathaniel, and retired Capt. Agba Ukel, argue that current loan programs are effectively out of reach for actual producers.
Chief Nathaniel reported that the application process is excessively difficult, forcing farmers to endure long waits for assistance that rarely arrives. He noted that many producers struggle due to a lack of infrastructure, specifically poor road networks, which complicates the movement of goods. Capt. Ukel added that he met every official requirement for support but was still denied, asserting that government-backed financial aid often bypasses legitimate farmers entirely.
In response to these grievances, Cross River State Commissioner for Agriculture and Irrigation Development, Johnson Ebokpo, stated that his ministry has created specific units to manage complaints and assist farmers in connecting with credit providers. As of now, the Bank of Agriculture has not provided a statement regarding these accusations.
