A coroner has concluded that Alex Hughes, the son of former professional footballer and manager Mark Hughes, passed away due to sudden adult death syndrome (SADS). The 38-year-old was discovered collapsed at his residence in Macclesfield, Cheshire, on June 19 by his two children.
Despite the efforts of paramedics, Alex could not be revived. Following his passing, Mark Hughes and his wife, Jill, expressed their profound grief, stating they were heartbroken by the sudden loss. Alex had established a career in football recruitment, having worked with clubs such as Grimsby Town and Manchester City, following a brief stint as a professional player.
SADS, sometimes referred to as sudden arrhythmic death syndrome, occurs when an individual passes away without a clear anatomical cause found during a post-mortem, as heart structures often appear normal. Experts at the British Heart Foundation explain that this condition typically stems from untreated, dangerous heart rhythms that lead to cardiac arrest. These events are frequently linked to undiagnosed, inherited heart conditions.
Reflecting on his son, Mark Hughes described Alex as a dedicated husband, father, and professional. Colleagues, including Grimsby Town head coach David Artell, remembered him as a highly regarded individual within the sport. Beyond his work in recruitment, Alex previously served as a performance analyst during his father’s managerial tenures at Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, and Fulham.
