A BBC investigation has revealed that managers at Partou King Street Nursery in Bristol allegedly disregarded warnings regarding a childcare worker who was later identified as a paedophile. Bessie Martin, a former employee, stated she reported Nathan Bennett’s suspicious actions to leadership months before his eventual arrest. She claims he was often seen holding children excessively and positioning them on his lap in areas obscured from CCTV monitoring. Although she consistently voiced these concerns, she was told she was misinterpreting the situation. Bennett was sentenced to 30 years in prison this February for abusing five children.
Partou stated that it encourages staff to report issues and has since upgraded its safeguarding protocols. While the specific nursery branch closed in December, the company remains one of the largest providers in England. Data analysis indicates that Partou and another major chain, Bright Horizons, received a significantly higher number of official welfare improvement notices from Ofsted following the arrests of Bennett and another offender, Vincent Chan. Both companies have defended their standards and emphasized their commitment to child safety. Experts and legal representatives have raised questions regarding the efficacy of Ofsted ratings, suggesting that current grading systems may not sufficiently account for safety failures or ongoing complaints.
