The Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) has formally requested that President Bola Tinubu, along with the governors of Edo and Delta states, designate the Benin-Sapele-Warri highway as an Infrastructure Emergency Zone. The group stresses that immediate reconstruction is necessary to address the worsening state of the road.
This appeal was detailed in the July 2026 edition of The Common Good Letter, a publication focused on government accountability. ANEEJ Executive Director, Rev. David Ugolor, characterized the highway as a significant threat to public safety and regional economic stability. The route currently causes immense hardship, as motorists face prolonged travel delays, vehicle damage, and rising transport expenses.
Ugolor highlighted that the highway’s poor condition has facilitated criminal activity, including kidnapping, while hindering the movement of agricultural goods and limiting access to healthcare and education. Despite past government promises and funding allocations, little progress has been made.
To resolve this, the group suggests a collaborative approach between the federal and state governments. Proposed actions include a formal emergency declaration by Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo and Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the public disclosure of contract financial details, and the implementation of independent oversight. Furthermore, the organization calls for temporary repairs and intensified security measures while awaiting full rehabilitation.
