Cholera Outbreak Claims Five Lives, Infects 53 in Plateau State

Health officials in Plateau State confirm that a cholera outbreak in the Mangu Local Government Area has caused five fatalities and infected 53 people.

A cholera outbreak in the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State has resulted in five deaths and 53 infections. Nicholas Ba’amlong, the State Commissioner for Health, shared these figures during a press conference held on Monday in Jos.

While describing the public health crisis as severe, Ba’amlong noted that it remains under control through ongoing state efforts and assistance from local residents. The illness initially emerged with eight suspected cases but has since reached the Mangu 1, Mangu 2, and Pushit wards, fueling fears of further spread.

Official reports from June 12, 2026, confirm 53 suspected cases, with 10 testing positive via Rapid Diagnostic Tests and four verified through laboratory culture. The government remains focused on containment as the transmission persists within the region.

Cholera is a severe diarrheal disease transmitted through the ingestion of water or food tainted by the Vibrio cholerae bacterium. It thrives in environments lacking proper sanitation and clean water, often leading to rapid, fatal dehydration if medical care is delayed.
