Benue State has reported no fatalities linked to Lassa fever over the past 30 days, with only a solitary laboratory-confirmed infection detected. Health and Human Services Commissioner Dr. Paul Ogwuche shared this update in Makurdi on Thursday while discussing the state’s epidemiological progress since late June 2026.
Dr. Ogwuche noted that out of 45 suspected cases evaluated, 44 returned negative results. He credited this outcome to the state’s refined surveillance, rapid response capabilities, and improved patient care protocols. Although the high-risk transmission period has ended, health authorities remain alert as the virus is endemic across Nigeria.
Monitoring continues across all 23 local government areas, focusing on early identification and containment. The state government is actively collaborating with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, and various partners to bolster emergency readiness. Furthermore, local leaders and the media are assisting in a broad community awareness campaign to promote hygiene and prompt reporting of potential symptoms.
Residents are advised to practice proper food storage to deter rodents and maintain clean environments. Officials urge anyone experiencing persistent fever, exhaustion, or other related symptoms to seek professional medical help immediately.
