Chelsea has entered into formal talks with Rayo Vallecano to secure the signature of left back Pep Chavarria. The club is pursuing the 28-year-old defender following the £52 million departure of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, a move that left manager Xabi Alonso searching for defensive depth.
Reports indicate that discussions are currently ongoing for the player, who remains tied to the Conference League runners-up for another four years. While Hato, a £37 million arrival from Ajax, showed significant improvement late last season, the club views Chavarria as a versatile addition capable of playing as both a left back and a wing back.
Chavarria appeared 44 times for his club last campaign, helping secure an eighth-place La Liga finish. Should this deal be completed, the Spaniard would become the second signing under Alonso, following the acquisition of Marco Palestra from Atalanta.
