During Cameroon’s presidential election on Sunday, the image of Egyptian football star Mohamed Salah unexpectedly appeared on the list of registered voters at the Ngaoundéré III polling station.
Fact-checks by multiple media outlets confirmed that Salah’s photo is indeed displayed on Elecam’s official website, the agency overseeing the elections.
While the incident has amused many online, it has also reignited serious concerns about the accuracy and credibility of Cameroon’s electoral register.
Vote counting began on Sunday, with President Paul Biya, the 92-year-old incumbent and the world’s oldest head of state, widely expected to prolong his 43-year rule.
