The University of Cambridge is initiating an independent inquiry into the tenure and hiring process of Jason Arday, according to Vice-Chancellor Deborah Prentice. A panel consisting of senior academics from both Cambridge and external institutions will commence this review immediately.
Arday, who gained recognition as the youngest Black professor at Cambridge in 2023, stepped down from his position as a sociology of education professor last week. His resignation followed public claims regarding plagiarism and the validity of his past academic work. The 41-year-old has formally denied these plagiarism accusations, citing the intense public pressure and personal hostility as the primary reasons for his departure.
In a message addressed to the university, Professor Prentice acknowledged the widespread frustration and distress caused by this situation. She emphasized that the university deeply values its staff of color and their significant contributions to scholarship. She further insisted that the current controversy must not undermine the legitimacy of their professional achievements at the institution. The results of this investigation will ultimately guide a broader evaluation of how Cambridge selects individuals for senior academic roles.
