BP has announced plans to sell its North Sea division, marking the end of six decades of oil production in the region for the energy company. This strategic choice stems from a internal review aimed at streamlining the corporation. The business unit currently maintains five production hubs, split between the central North Sea and areas west of Shetland, supporting a workforce of roughly 1,100 people.
This development arrives as Prime Minister Andy Burnham recently informed US President Donald Trump of his intention to take a practical stance on regional oil and gas policy. Increased drilling remains a priority for many industry leaders, trade unions, and specific Labour MPs, as well as President Trump. Meg O’Neill, the chief executive of BP, stated that the business would thrive under different ownership. She emphasized that while BP remains committed to its long-term presence in the UK, this specific division is better suited for a transition to another company.
