The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) has issued a stern rebuttal against the Plateau State branch of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN). This follows allegations from MACBAN Chairman Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, who claimed that four Fulani herdsmen were ambushed and murdered by Berom militias near the Gero-Rafin Bauna area in Jos South Local Government Area.
Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary for the BYM, dismissed these assertions as complete fabrications. According to the BYM, these claims are intended to obscure the reality of ongoing violence perpetrated by bandits against rural Berom communities. The association explicitly denies the existence of any Berom militia, arguing that if such a force existed, their villages would not suffer from frequent, unprovoked invasions and displacement.
The BYM provided a different account of the events on June 29, 2026. They stated that an armed group of over 40 individuals attacked miners at Nyango in the Gyel District. This assault resulted in the deaths of three local miners and left two others injured. The BYM maintains that local vigilantes intervened to protect the area, successfully neutralizing four of the attackers who were part of the armed group that initiated the violence. They contend that MACBAN is attempting to misrepresent these armed assailants as peaceful herders to shift the narrative and deflect blame from their own members.
