Bayelsa Community Unrest Erupts After Protest Against Youth Arrests Turns Violent

Tension has gripped the Biseni clan in Bayelsa State as a protest by women against the arrest of several youths escalated into a violent confrontation with soldiers, resulting in injuries.

The Biseni clan in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State is currently experiencing heightened instability following the detention of local youths and a subsequent clash between protesters and security forces that left four individuals wounded. The dispute originated when contractors employed by Renaissance, a firm formerly known as Shell, filed a complaint with the Inspector-General of Police. This petition, which alleged criminal activities including arson and vandalism, led to the arrests and court-ordered detention of several community members at the Okaka Correctional Facility.

In response, local women blocked the primary access road to the community, demanding the immediate release of their relatives. The blockade stalled several industrial vehicles, including those supporting local oil operations. A government representative attempting to negotiate an end to the protest reported that the situation deteriorated when military personnel arrived at the scene. An altercation ensued, resulting in soldiers firing weapons and protesters hurling stones, leading to injuries among the women.

Bulodisiye Ndiwari, the Chairman of Yenagoa Local Government Area, confirmed he is in active communication with police leadership and state officials to de-escalate the conflict. He expressed confidence that a resolution, including the potential release of the detained youths, is possible soon. The incident highlights the persistent friction in the Biseni region, where locals often voice grievances regarding environmental damage and limited infrastructure development resulting from oil exploration.
