Olusegun Obasanjo Visits Rabiu Kwankwaso in Kano Ahead of 2027 Election Cycle

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo held a private meeting with Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso in Kano, sparking fresh speculation about political alliances for the upcoming 2027 elections.

Olusegun Obasanjo, the former Nigerian President, visited Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso at his private home in Kano on Thursday. Kwankwaso, who is currently a prominent figure in the Nigeria Democratic Congress, welcomed the former leader alongside Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, the party’s Kano governorship candidate.

Saifullahi Hassan, a media aide to Kwankwaso, stated that the meeting was friendly and served as an opportunity for the two men to reconnect. While the specific topics of their private conversation remain private, the event has sparked rumors of potential political shifts before the 2027 general elections. There is growing interest in whether this indicates future cooperation among opposition factions.

The two men share a history dating back to Obasanjo’s presidency from 2003 to 2007, when Kwankwaso served as the Minister of Defence. This meeting is notable given Obasanjo’s previous public backing of Peter Obi, the current presidential candidate for the NDC, during the 2023 electoral season.
