Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the former leader of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has identified parents as the primary drivers of examination fraud in Nigeria. He argues that guardians contribute significantly more to these dishonest activities than the students taking the tests.
During a Sunday interview with ThisDay Live, Oloyede highlighted parental involvement as the most distressing observation from his ten-year stint at the helm of JAMB. He noted that many parents actively push their children toward unethical behavior to guarantee their entry into universities.
Oloyede emphasized that students are rarely the originators of such schemes. Instead, he believes parents are inducting the younger generation into criminal behavior. Reflecting on his tenure, he expressed deep emotional concern over the lengths to which adults go to assist their children in cheating, viewing it as a harmful legacy that damages the future of the nation.
Ultimately, Oloyede urged parents to provide a more ethical foundation for their offspring rather than perpetuating moral failings. He remains convinced that the core of the exam malpractice issue lies with parental conduct rather than the students themselves.
