The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has officially condemned the tragic death of a final-year student at D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic in Itori-Ewekoro, Ogun State. The student, who was studying Marketing, lost her life during a violent midnight armed robbery in the Eruku area.
The incident triggered significant unrest, with students blocking the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway to protest the lack of safety in their community. According to SUG president Owoigbe Blessing, the attack also left several other students with serious injuries, including gunshot wounds and lacerations. Students have urged Governor Dapo Abiodun to intervene, noting that this is not an isolated incident in Eruku.
In response, NANS Secretary General Oladimeji Uthman characterized the violence as a direct threat to the student population and declared a state of emergency in Eruku. The organization has advised students living in the area to relocate temporarily for their safety. Furthermore, NANS demanded that the Ogun State Police Command, led by CP Bode Ojajuni, launch a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
NANS has also called for a collaborative effort between the state government, law enforcement, and traditional leaders like the Eleruku of Eruku, Oba Kolawole Edunjobi Adifase, to implement more robust security measures. They emphasized that students must be able to pursue their education without the constant risk of criminal violence.
