Alwan Hassan, a prominent figure within the All Progressives Congress, contends that advanced degrees are not definitive indicators of a leader’s efficacy. Appearing on the Politics Today program via Channels Television, Hassan refuted the notion that higher education equates to proficient governance.
He pointed to figures such as former President Goodluck Jonathan and Peter Obi to illustrate his view that credentials should not overshadow competence and tangible results. Hassan questioned whether the academic achievements of these individuals significantly improved their public communication or policy outcomes, asserting that educational background is not a reliable proxy for leadership ability.
Referencing Atiku Abubakar, Hassan argued that sound political judgment arises from experience rather than formal schooling. He criticized opposition parties for fixating on President Bola Tinubu’s academic history instead of offering substantive critique of his policy performance. Regarding ongoing debates about Tinubu’s Chicago State University documents, Hassan clarified that the institution has not labeled the certificate provided to INEC as fraudulent. He noted that the Nigerian Constitution primarily requires basic literacy for public office, concluding that the primary metric for any leader should be their capacity to positively impact the lives of citizens.
