Anambra State Encourages Families to Discuss HIV to Limit Transmission

Anambra State health officials are advocating for families to normalize discussions about HIV to help reduce transmission rates and combat social stigma.

The Anambra State administration is urging citizens to prioritize consistent, transparent conversations regarding HIV within their households. This initiative aims to address the spread of the virus across the region.

Dr. Nkem Okeke, who serves as the Executive Director and Project Manager for the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA), stated that tackling the epidemic requires a communal approach. He noted that managing HIV—including testing, treatment, and combating social stigma—should extend beyond the medical sector to involve family members and local leaders.

According to Dr. Okeke, normalizing dialogue about HIV within the home can encourage early medical screening, improve treatment adherence, and foster healthier lifestyle decisions for all generations. He underscored that parents, religious institutions, schools, and the media share the responsibility of building awareness.

ANSACA remains dedicated to strengthening its public outreach and establishing collaborations to lower infection rates while providing essential support for those affected. Residents are encouraged to prioritize routine testing to help eliminate the epidemic in Anambra State and Nigeria as a whole.
