Cross River Assembly Calls For Ban On Styrofoam And Foil Paper For Food Packaging

The Cross River State House of Assembly has urged the state government to prohibit the use of Styrofoam and foil paper for food packaging.

This move aims to protect public health and encourage environmentally sustainable practices.

Several states, including Lagos, have already implemented similar bans.

During yesterday’s plenary session, lawmakers raised concerns about the health risks linked to the use of foil materials, which are often exposed to high temperatures.

They called on the state government to instruct the Environmental Task Force Agency to enforce the proposed ban.

The motion was sponsored by Hon. Ogiji Martins Achadu, representing Yala 2 State Constituency, and was adopted by the Assembly.

In his motion, Achadu highlighted that Styrofoam—a lightweight plastic used for food packaging and disposable containers—is made from polystyrene, a petroleum-based product that poses health hazards.

“When exposed to heat or used for food packaging, Styrofoam releases styrene, a toxic chemical that can leach into food. Long-term exposure to styrene has been linked to neurological issues, respiratory problems, and hormonal disruption,” Achadu emphasized.

The legislator further explained that Styrofoam is non-biodegradable, contributes to pollution and waste management challenges, and poses a threat to both land and marine ecosystems.

“The lives of Cross Riverians are the number one priority of His Excellency, Prince Bassey Edet Otu. That is why we must curb anything that will negatively impact the health and environment of the citizens,” he said.

The Speaker, Elvert Ayambem, expressed gratitude to the motion’s sponsor and other members for their dedication to enhancing citizens’ well-being through legislation that serves the people.
