With the Osun State governorship election less than 48 hours away, 2,339,233 registered voters prepare to head to the polls. Among the 15 candidates, Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is one of the few actively campaigning on a 10-point agenda focused on industrialization and worker welfare. A former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Salaam is urging voters to look beyond traditional political parties.
His campaign leverages the grassroots following of former Governor Rauf Aregbesola and his own humble reputation, particularly within his home in the Osun-West Senatorial District. He has managed to attract several defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) who previously aligned with Aregbesola. His regional influence could complicate the prospects for rivals like Adeleke and Oyebamiji, potentially making him a key player in any future political coalitions.
However, Salaam faces significant hurdles. His close association with Aregbesola remains a point of contention, as many civil servants still harbor resentment regarding pension and salary policies from Aregbesola’s tenure. Furthermore, analysts suggest the ADC lacks the comprehensive infrastructure and financial resources typically required to secure a victory in a statewide election. Despite these obstacles, Salaam remains committed to his bid, asserting that he is the most capable candidate to lead the state.
