A group of legislative lawyers known as the Incorporated Trustees of the Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners (ALDRAP) has petitioned the Abuja Federal High Court. They are seeking a court order to force the House of Representatives to issue an arrest warrant for Prof. Abubakar Olanrewaju Suleiman, the Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).
The legal action stems from allegations that Suleiman participated in the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in Kwara State without resigning from his position, which violates the Electoral Act. ALDRAP contends that Suleiman ignored a summons to appear before the House Committee on Legislative Library, Research and Documentation on June 18, 2026. The lawsuit names the Speaker of the House and Yusuf Galambi, the committee chairman, as respondents.
Through their lawyer, J. J. Lamy, the plaintiffs argue that the House has the constitutional power under sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution, alongside the 2023 Standing Orders, to compel witness attendance. They are requesting that the court mandate these officials to enforce their authority. Additionally, ALDRAP is pursuing a separate case to have Suleiman removed from his post, arguing he should have resigned by March 31, 2026. The association has provided the committee with evidence, including documents and media reports, to support claims of his involvement in the political contest.
