The Kogi State High Court in Lokoja has postponed the cybercrime proceedings against activist Usman Okai Austin until September 29. Justice A.S. Ibrahim scheduled this date to allow the prosecution to bring forward its witness, notably the Secretary to the Kogi State Government, who is slated to provide testimony.
Okai faces 16 charges initiated by the state government. During the recent proceedings, Justice Ibrahim emphasized that the court remains committed to providing an impartial process for both the prosecution and the defense. Furthermore, the judge warned the prosecution against employing tactics that might impede the progress of the trial.
Speaking to reporters after the session, Okai labeled the case a political effort against him, though he maintained his faith in the legal system. He stated that he remains undeterred by the court’s schedule and will continue to criticize the government when he deems it necessary. The charges originate from social media accusations made by Okai, who alleged that Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo misappropriated substantial funds meant for local government councils and state agencies.
Prior to the High Court proceedings, the Department of State Services secured a remand order for Okai, resulting in his detention at the Federal Correctional Centre in Kabba. Okai previously ran as the Peoples Democratic Party candidate for the Dekina/Bassa Federal Constituency during the 2023 elections.
