The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is urging the Federal Government to initiate an independent probe into the passing of Mary Habila. The physiotherapist was discovered deceased at the Ebonyi property belonging to Works Minister David Umahi. Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, issued a statement on Wednesday requesting that the Minister temporarily vacate his post to ensure a fair investigation.
The ADC argues that a death occurring within a high-ranking official’s residence demands total transparency. They claim key details surrounding Habila’s presence at the home and the circumstances of her death remain unaddressed. To ensure impartiality, the party insists that the investigation must operate without executive influence. Furthermore, they are calling for a comprehensive autopsy and the public disclosure of all findings.
Critics within the ADC suggest the current administration is too focused on shielding officials rather than seeking the truth. They maintain that the only way to bolster public trust is through an independent inquiry. Meanwhile, the Ebonyi State Police Command has moved the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department. Minister Umahi has refuted any claims of foul play or a cover-up, clarifying that Habila was an employee of the Federal Ministry of Works and that he encouraged her relatives to authorize a medical examination to establish the cause of death.
