Relatives of Lindsay and Craig Foreman confirmed on Monday that the British couple has ceased their multi-month hunger strikes. The pair, currently in their 50s, were apprehended in January 2025 while traveling through Iran on a motorcycle expedition. They were handed 10-year prison sentences in February for espionage, an allegation they reject. Craig Foreman received an additional two-year sentence for communicating with journalists.
The couple initiated these recent strikes in May to protest the severe physical consequences of their incarceration. According to family members, Craig sustained his fast for 93 days, while Lindsay participated for 84 days. They have frequently reported on the poor conditions within Tehran’s Evin Prison, a facility housing numerous foreign nationals and political dissidents.
The family statement explained that the couple concluded their protest by transitioning into a five-day fast for good, intended to highlight the plight of all prisoners in Iran. Previously, the couple engaged in a one-month hunger strike last year to advocate for better access to communication. Following warnings from United Nations experts regarding the couple’s health and their potential status as political hostages, the family remains focused on their recovery. Joe Bennett, Lindsay’s son, highlighted that the recent remote operation of the UK embassy has complicated efforts to secure their release after 18 months of detention.
