Iranian officials have leveled accusations against Ukraine, claiming a Saturday attack on a merchant ship in the Caspian Sea resulted in one fatality and one injury among the crew. Tehran vowed that the strike would face a retaliatory response.
This development follows public remarks from President Volodymyr Zelensky, who stated that Ukrainian forces executed long-range operations in the Caspian region targeting vessels linked to military supply chains between Iran and Russia. The Security Service of Ukraine confirmed via Telegram that drone strikes were directed at sanctioned cargo ships involved in transferring military goods.
The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the incident as a criminal act and summoned the Ukrainian charge d’affaires to express their formal objection. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also reached out to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, requesting intervention from both the European Union and the United Nations Security Council. Iran continues to maintain that it is not a participant in the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kyiv.
