Unidentified drones hover over German military facility following Leipzig airport incident

Drones were detected over a German base housing Patriot missile components shortly after an explosive-laden drone was found at a major airport.

Authorities in Germany reported that two drones were seen flying above a military installation in Mechernich, located near Bonn, this past Thursday. The site is known for storing equipment related to US-made Patriot air-defense systems. The German Bundeswehr confirmed that military police were initially sent to the location before regional law enforcement took over the investigation.

This event follows the recent discovery of an explosive-filled drone at Leipzig/Halle airport, a logistics hub utilized by NATO and the German military. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt characterized the incident as part of a trend of hybrid warfare aimed at destabilizing the nation. While Russian involvement is frequently suspected in such incidents, the Kremlin continues to reject these accusations.

The Patriot missile systems stored at the site have proven essential for Ukrainian forces defending against Russian ballistic missile attacks. Despite their importance, supply shortages remain a concern for Kyiv. Investigations into the origin of the drones remain ongoing, with local authorities providing little information to the public at this stage.
