Armed conflict between the Ethiopian national army and Tigrayan rebels has concluded, according to local and security insiders speaking to AFP on Sunday. The military engagement occurred near the border with Sudan.
An anonymous member of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) reported a de-escalation of tension, though specific casualty counts were not disclosed. The skirmishes, which featured drones and heavy weaponry, commenced around 6:00 am on Saturday in Shererina and ceased the following morning. A security official corroborated that the fighting had halted.
The TPLF previously alleged that the federal government had significantly escalated its hostile operations, claiming a major infantry offensive was underway. Ethiopia’s federal authorities have not provided a formal statement. The fighting remains concentrated in western Tigray, an area currently under the control of Amhara nationalists.
Both Ethiopian federal troops and Tigrayan forces have been stationed near the northern border for months, frequently exchanging accusations regarding plans to initiate a fresh conflict. International concern regarding a return to war has intensified, especially given the memory of the brutal two-year struggle that concluded less than four years ago, which resulted in an estimated 600,000 fatalities.
