An 85-year-old official identified as Reuben Owie was murdered by gunmen in the Iyowa community of Ovia North-East, Edo State. Mr. Owie, who served as the community secretary and a local leader, was ambushed at his home in Iguosa near Benin City on the night of August 2, 2026.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the tragedy after receiving a formal report from the victim’s son, Osayomwanbo Owie. According to police spokesperson ASP Eno Ikoedem, the victim was inside his residence on Abu Street when two unidentified assailants arrived and fired a lethal shot into his head.
Responding officers processed the crime scene and transported the body to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. Authorities have launched an active investigation and are working to track down the suspects responsible for the killing.
