President Bola Tinubu has sanctioned salary hikes ranging from 30 to 80 percent for members of the Nigerian armed forces. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, confirmed on Tuesday that approximately 250,000 service members will receive the raises starting September 1.
The adjustments are tiered by rank. Officers from the rank of colonel and above, including Brigadier-Generals up to Generals, will see a 30 percent raise. Personnel ranging from warrant officers to colonels are set for a 50 percent increase, while ranks from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive an 80 percent pay boost.
This initiative will shift the military’s annual payroll expenditure from N660 billion to N924 billion. President Tinubu noted that this decision reflects his admiration for the sacrifices troops make in combating terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry.
The administration remains committed to enhancing the welfare of soldiers and upgrading military infrastructure with better technology and weaponry. Tinubu stated that national prosperity depends on security and urged personnel to view these raises as a demonstration of the government’s gratitude for their ongoing service to the nation.
