The Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru (FUAZ) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially started a 21-day countdown for the school’s leadership. This follows a decision made during a special congress on July 28, where lecturers agreed to strike if their concerns remain ignored. The notice period began on July 29, with support from national ASUU representatives and the Sokoto Zone coordinator.
Branch chairperson Danbauchi Senchi stated that the institution has ignored directives regarding the 2025 agreement established between the union and the Federal Government. This pact, finalized in late 2025, mandates a 40 per cent salary hike and the disbursement of delayed financial benefits. While the government provided funds to clear five months of Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) for federal institutions, FUAZ lecturers report that they have received neither the salary increase nor these owed arrears.
Furthermore, the union highlighted that the university is struggling due to a lack of a government take-off grant. Despite these operational hurdles, staff members have persisted in their teaching and research duties. ASUU is now calling for the immediate fulfillment of the 2025 agreement and the payment of all outstanding financial debts, warning that a strike will follow if the governing council and government fail to respond before the deadline.
